Would you buy a sign from a homeless person? Willie Baronet would. The award-winning artist and SMU professor started collecting homeless signs in 1993, and what started as a reaction to awkward encounters became a long-term project that now consists of over 1,300 pieces. Willie started his ‘We are all homeless’ project as a way to promote awareness and compassion for the homeless through national and international exhibitions. He also traveled the country to make the documentary, “Signs of Humanity” about his journey of interviewing more than 100 people on the streets and purchasing over 280 signs. Was Willie ever living on the streets, or asking help for money you may ask? No, all he wants is to have people think about the concept of home.
